Are You Ready Start a Dialog?

The wonderful thing about the Internet is that there are tons of resources at your fingertips. All you need to do is search and you'll find plenty of excellent reference material. For example, here are three really good presentations about Social Media from slideshare.com that explain it very well.

Add This!

I am slowly reading through all of your blogs and upon reading Karolo's blog about the International Rivers Lunch, I was excited to see the little icons at the bottom of the page which make it easy for viewers to share the page on various social media sites.

If you want to make it easy for people to share your page with others, take a look at AddThis.

Here's what it looks like:
Have you created your Facebook account yet? Have you bookmarked anything in del.icio.us?

Our Blogs

Here is a list of all your blogs for the class. Remember to post to your blog everyday and comment on at least two other blogs every week.

Also, more important: Be authentic, honest and truthful, have fun and don't forget about the elephant!

Seth Godin in Meatball Sundae: Is Your Marketing In Synch
I wish I could bring Seth Godin in to present this course to you, but since that is a little out of our price range, the next best thing is for you to read or listen to his book, follow his blog and watch every YouTube video he is in. The man is a genius and really has a knack for understanding where we are going not just in Marketing but in business in general. He is an advocate for doing it right and isn't afraid to tell stories about his own failures. If you take nothing else from this class, and only remember Seth, I will have done a good job.

Blogging

"The real genius in blogs shows itself in how they are written."
- Andy Wibbels, Blogwild!
For discussion in class:

PROS of Blogs

Search engines
Target
Credibility
Fun
Community

CONS of Blogs
The elephant
Dirty Laundry
Transparency
Work
Criticism

Why am I having you watch this video about vlogging? Because when creating a blog, it is important to find your style.

In addition, be sure to be consistent, i.e. post regularly and also practice courtesy by thanking people when they comment on your blog and adding your thoughts to other blogs you like.

If you are new to the world of blogs, or even if you have been blogging for a while, I encourage you to read Blogwild: A Guide for Small Business Blogging by Andy Wibbels and Blog: Understanding the Information Reformation That's Changing Your World by Hugh Hewitt. I don't think there could be two more polar opposite approaches to the same subject, but both offer really valuable information about this communications tool.

Blogs are so easy to write and publish that practically anyone who can type can start one. There is no need to know anything at all about web design or html and if you as the blogger are prolific and knowledgable enough about the topics you choose to write about, the blog may take and become an information hot spot.

Examples of blogs and where to find the cool stuff:

For a huge amount of information about best practices for blogging, see Matt's Big Blogging Resource List. Not only does this list include 61 recommended articles and posts about blogging, but it's a great example of link bait too! Remember link bait from our Maximizing Search Engines course?

There are literally thousands of excellent blogs out there for you to learn from, so when you are looking to build some blog references to look at, do a search for your subject matter on one of the blog search tools, like http://blogsearch.google.com/, or http://www.globeofblogs.com.

Check out http://www.icerocket.com to see trends in blogging. For example, look at http://blogs.icerocket.com/search?q=global+warming which shows the results on a search for "global warming." When you click on the "Trend It" button you get a great chart showing the
activity around this subject - http://trend.icerocket.com/trend?query1=global+warming&days=30

These are some of the blogs I like and read:

Blogs of interest noted in Blogwild! by Andy Wibbels:

http://www.bzzagent.com
http://www.marqui.com

Blog ecosystems
- places to find where the buzz is.

IceRocket - http://www.icerocket.com
BlogPulse - http://www.blogpulse.com
Technorati - http://www.technorati.com

How to keep your finger (and blog) on the pulse:

Mashups are ways to add value. Check out that link to see how Seth Godin recently described them. Take a look at http://www.popurls.com, which offers the most popular information from most of the top social media ranking sites. PopURLs is an example of a mashup, because it is receiving feeds from all the sites it refers to. It is like a Google directory of most recent posts on all of the top Web 2.0 sites.

Also look at the blogrolls of bloggers you like. The blogroll is a list of links to other blogs and
web sites from a blog site. If you like a particular blogger, you may find other blogs you like from their blogroll. (I know the name is unfortunate, but that's really what it's called.)

Blog Ads - http://www.blogads.com
This is likely to grow in popularity VERY SOON! People will be buying blog ads just as much if not more than they purchase sponsored listings through Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing.

Also see Federated Media - http://www.federatedmedia.net for advertising on blogs.

How do you start a blog?

There are many services which will allow you to start your own blog. These include:

Comments

Allowing people to comment on your blog enables you to keep in touch with your audience, once you acquire one and it will also tell you what people think of your posts. Andy says if your blog has no comments, you are not being honest enough.

Tracking Blog Statistics

http://www.sitemeter.com
http://www.blogpulse.com

http://analytics.google.com

Assignment: The assignment for this course is to start a blog and post to it every day for the duration of the course. If at that point you decide to continue with the blog you are of course welcome to do so. If you prefer to delete the blog at the end of the course you may do that as well.

You are also required to comment on at least two blogs of your classmates every week.

Case Study: http://javiersbusinesswithart.blogspot.com/
Javier is a previous student in this course and posted something about a book he read. Check out the comments for New Rules of Marketing & PR. One of them is from the author of the book!
